The single point of failure

A shop with one cutting machine has its entire front end depending on one asset. A source fault, a cutting head collision, a chiller failure or a delivery cable replacement stops everything downstream. Welding, forming and assembly run out of parts within a day or two.

Subcontracting during a breakdown is possible, but it is slow to arrange, expensive at short notice, and the subcontractor's cut quality and lead time are outside the shop's control.
