Compared with the structure of laser equipment, in the carbon dioxide laser cutting technology, carbon dioxide gas is the medium that produces the laser beam. Fiber lasers work through diodes and optical cables. The optical fiber laser system transmits the beam to the laser cutting head through the optical fiber cable instead of the reflector. This has many advantages. First is the size of the cutting table. Unlike gas laser technology, the reflector must be set at a certain distance. Fiber laser technology has no range limit. The fiber laser can even be installed next to the plasma cutting head of the plasma cutting table, which is not the choice of CO2 laser cutting technology. In addition, compared with the equivalent power gas cutting system, the ability to bend the optical fiber makes the system more compact.
Compare from the electro-optical conversion efficiency. Perhaps the most important and significant advantage of fiber splitting technology is its energy efficiency. Fiber laser cutting system has higher electro-optical conversion efficiency than carbon dioxide laser cutting. For each power unit of the CO2 cutting system, the actual typical utilization rate is about 8% to 10%. For the fiber laser cutting system, users can expect higher power efficiency in the order of 25% to 30%. That is to say, the overall energy consumption of the optical fiber cutting system is about 3 to 5 times lower than that of the carbon dioxide cutting system, which improves the energy efficiency to more than 86%.
Compare from the cutting effect. The wavelength of the fiber laser is relatively short, which increases the absorption of the beam by the cut material, and can cut materials such as brass and copper as well as non-conductive materials. The optical fiber cutting machine is small in size and compact in structure, which is easy to meet the requirements of flexible processing. A more concentrated beam produces a smaller focus and deeper depth of focus, so the fiber laser can quickly cut thinner materials and more effectively cut materials of medium thickness. When cutting materials up to 6 mm thick, the cutting speed of 1.5kW fiber laser cutting system is equivalent to that of 3kW carbon dioxide laser cutting system. Compare from the use cost. The power consumption of fiber laser cutting machine is only 20-30% of that of similar CO2 laser cutting machine.
In terms of machine maintenance, fiber laser cutting is more environmentally friendly and convenient, and the CO2 laser system needs regular maintenance. The mirror needs maintenance and calibration, and the resonator needs regular maintenance. On the other hand, the fiber laser cutting solution requires almost no maintenance. Carbon dioxide laser cutting system needs carbon dioxide as laser gas. Due to the purity of carbon dioxide gas, the resonant cavity will be contaminated and needs to be cleaned regularly. For a multi-kilowatt carbon dioxide system, this will cost at least $20000 per year. In addition, many carbon dioxide emission reductions require high-speed axial flow turbines to provide laser gas, and turbines need maintenance and renovation.
Fiber laser cutting machine is much better than CO2 in cutting accuracy, use cost and economic effect. In the future development trend, the fiber laser cutting machine will occupy the position of the mainstream equipment, but compared with the carbon dioxide laser cutting machine, the cutting range of the fiber is relatively narrow. Due to the wavelength, it can only cut metal materials, and non-metals are not easily absorbed by it, thus affecting its cutting range. When selecting cutting equipment, you should consider your actual situation and choose the cutting solution with the highest cost performance.
